Jim Merrill’s Passing

Jim Merrill
Jim Merrill

With sadness, VCCCDRA has learned of the passing of Jim Merrill on February 2, 2026. Jim was an English professor at Oxnard College and retired in 2017. Jim served numerous times as Department Chair, on tenure committees and various governance committees on campus.

From Jim’s obituary (https://www.vcstar.com/obituaries/pyrk1413873):

Jim Merrill (James Arthur Merrill on the dotted line) was an incredible, loving, principled man who touched many lives. He died at home in his sleep on Feb. 2, 2026. He was 70.

It’s hard to imagine a more meaningful, impactful life. His family and friends grieve that he was robbed of the time we thought he would have but are glad that he had so many fine adventures while he lived.

Jim moved to Oxnard in 1981 and made it his home. He received a tenure-track position at Oxnard College in 1985. There, he spent his career as an active member of the college community and as professor of English and ESL, teaching and chairing his department until his retirement in May of 2017.

In 1985, he married Kitty Ann Balabanov. They had two daughters and enjoyed a rich family life. Jim and Kitty raised their children in the Unitarian Universalist Church of Ventura, where they both served in several leadership positions. Jim served two separate terms as president of the board of trustees, sang in the choir from its founding until his death, and was active in regional Unitarian Universalist governance.

Jim showed his love of community in his actions. In the ‘90s, he chaired the Tierra Vista Neighborhood Council and was the campaign manager for the Measure N School Bond. In 2001, he joined the Ocean View School Board and continued to serve first as a trustee and then board president until his death. In all his leadership roles, he saw himself as a caretaker and referred to himself not by his title, but as one serving in that position.

His service to the wider world was nurtured by his deep devotion to family: as a spouse, a daddy, and a brother. He leaves behind his wife Kitty, daughters Erin and Caitlin, daughter-in-law Raven, and brother Tony and sister-in-law Gena. He is preceded in death by his parents, and his older sister, Judy.

His deep intelligence, quick wit, and love of storytelling made Jim a delight in conversations and a superb partner in Trivial Pursuit games. He traveled to many lands and enjoyed exploring and visiting the far-flung friends that made up his extended family. As a talented musician, he was quick to take the harmony line and to regale his family with a lullaby, ditty, or jingle. We will miss the music and joy he brought to our lives.

While at Oxnard College, Jim composed the College’s Alma Mater, which is framed and now hangs in the Liberal Studies Building, where his office was located.

A memorial for Jim will be held on March 1st, 1:00 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Ventura, 5654 Ralston St., Ventura, CA.

Tom Bertolino’s Passing

Tom Bertolino
Tom Bertolino

With sadness, VCCCDRA has learned of the passing of Tom Bertolino on December 6, 2025. Tom was an engineering and mathematics professor at Ventura College and retired in 2000.

Tom was born June 20, 1935, to Edward (HS principal and coach) and Vivian (grade school teacher and community pianist) Bertolino in Nokomis, Illinois. Tom graduated from Nokomis High School in 1953.

Tom graduated from the University of Illinois in 1958, earning a Master’s in Electrical Engineering that year. In 1957, Tom met Shirley Clark during summer 1957 employment. They were married August 23, 1958, and moved to San Diego, where Tom was employed at Astronautics working on the Atlas and then Centaur missile guidance systems.

Tom’s goal to become an educator was attained September 1965 as an engineering and mathematics instructor, which continued until he retired in 2000. Tom then continued teaching part-time at VC for 5 more years, plus tutoring at Holy Cross School.

The second benefit of Tom’s teaching was summer vacations which gave him time to take the family to visit relatives in Illinois and go camping, traveling to four campuses the summers he won National Science Foundation course scholarships, and to Scotland in 1980-81 for a year of teaching at Thurso Technical College.

Tom was an active instructor on campus, serving on many committees. He was treasurer of San Diego chapter of CORE. As other issues arose over the years, he actively supported many like-minded political candidates. Tom volunteered at the County Fair, read scientific journals, eagerly attended plays and concerts, enjoyed picnics, a bowl of popcorn, watched science fiction movies and TV programs, listened to “Prairie Home Companion” radio shows. He supported his children’s sports, music, dance, club, and school events with unfailing attendance, love, and respect.

Tom was an intense forward-thinking environmentalist before the word came into common lexicon. He saved newspapers early and helped start the Saturday recycling program at Ventura College, served on the first City Bicycling Committee, SOAR (Save Open-Space and Agricultural Resources), and Zero Population Growth. He was a wizard at repairing things (especially electric appliances), was frugal with the use of water and utilities, lifetime example in all respects. Bicycling was his transportation mode 85% of the time.

Tom is survived by his life companion of 67 years, Shirley. He was a beloved father to his children – Lisa Mueting (William), Jon Bertolino (Michelle), and Linda Viles (Andrew). He was a role model grandfather to Tess, Max, Ivan, Nadia, MacKenzie, Taylor, Ryan, Zachary, Emily and Darren, and four great-grandchildren. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, sister Barbara, and grandson Nicholas. His ashes will be spread with official sanction at Yosemite National Park by his children.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 am, Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at the Boyko and Reardon Telegraph Road Mortuary, Teloma Drive, Ventura. The family has asked VC math retiree, Lydia Matthews to say a few words at the service. If retirees who cannot attend would like her to share one of your memories, please email your thoughts to Michael Bowen, at fizzbowen@gmail.com.

The family invites attendees to stay for a catered picnic style reception in the community room for friends, neighbors, fell college instructors and the students to continue the Celebration.

The family wants to acknowledge the loving care given by granddaughter Nadia Mueting, the dedicated support of Devoted Care Services and Assisted Living Hospice.

Sharon Miller

With sadness, VCCCDRA has learned of the passing of Sharon Miller, retired Student Activities Specialist at Moorpark College.

As announced by Dr. Julius Sokenu, President, Moorpark College:

“It is with a heavy heart that I share with you the passing of our colleague, mentor, and friend Sharon Miller. Sharon served our students and campus community from 1993 to 2017. She’s defined what it means to put students first. Students at Moorpark College for multiple generations were introduced to leadership and service because Sharon Miller, Student Activities Specialist nurtured, mentored, challenged and loved them and empowered them to lead with grace. She became synonymous with student leadership because students were her why. Sharon modeled integrity, collegiality and was always present for colleagues as well as staff. Two months ago she attended Mike Madrid’s presentation at the college. She was the advisor to ASMC when he was student body president in the early 90s. I saw the pride in her as she watched him mingle with the crowd and Sharon waited till the end and gave him the biggest hug and he in return embraced her. He kept saying, ‘she’s a reason I’m here.’ We lost a force for good and for those who did not know her, her legacy is in our ASMC, it’s in our high transfer rates and it’s in the many lives she touched by just being her kind and caring self.

“Her smile and kindness remain in our hearts!”

Fall 2025 Monitor

Dear Colleagues,
Welcome to the Fall Edition of the Monitor! I hope this missive finds you and your families well as we move into the holiday season.

As we prepare to usher in 2026 I want to give a nod to a couple of the Executive Board’s accomplishments this year and to those who worked to achieve them. You may recall that one of the goals from the Executive Board’s long-range planning was to improve ways in which we communicate with the membership. Sandy Hajas, Carmen Guerrero and David Magallanes developed a new website for the Association, and members of the Executive Board assisted with the testing to refine the functionality and content. The result is an attractive and user-friendly new website that provides us with ways to communicate current information like benefits updates and pictures and provides members with the ability to make online payment for dues and donations. It also provides a secure area, accessible by password only, where we can share confidential information with the membership. This same team also established the VCCCDRA Facebook Group, which is a members-only Facebook page that provides yet another way for us to stay connected with one another and the Association news. Your Executive Board members volunteer their time and efforts to projects like these in addition to carrying out their regular responsibilities for the Executive Board and the Association. I hope you will take a moment to check out the website if you haven’t already done so, to join the Facebook group if so inclined, and to thank your Board members for their work on the Association’s behalf!

Our Fall Social Event was held on October 30th at the Oxnard College Bistro, and I have to say that it was one of the most enjoyable social events that I have attended. First and foremost, we were welcomed and treated to an excellent lunch by Chef Dan Ceco and his Culinary Arts students. We also had the opportunity to honor OC’s 50th Anniversary in a very special way, by recognizing and thanking six of the college’s founding faculty members who were in attendance. Please read Marie Son Hoo’s article on the event in this edition, and check out the website for some great pictures, at https://vcccdra.org/oc-bistro-2025/

Chad and I will spend the next few weeks trying to figure out where to put a Christmas tree in the midst of a major downstairs remodeling project. Here’s hoping your holidays are a bit less crazy than ours will be!

Happy Holidays!

Ventura County Community College District Retirees Association (VCCCDRA)

Photos of the Fall Social 2025

The Fall Social Event on October 30, 2025, celebrating Oxnard College’s 50th Anniversary, was a great success. The gathering, which took place at Oxnard College and welcomed 55 retirees, featured an exceptional luncheon thoughtfully prepared and served by students from the Culinary Arts Program under the direction of Head Chef Dan Ceco. For many of our retirees, this was their first experience at the Oxnard College “Bistro,” and they discovered that what they had heard about it was entirely true. As a result, they were not disappointed.

Gail Metcalf’s Passing

Gail and Walter Metcalf

With sadness, VCCCDRA is informing the membership of the passing of Gail Metcalf on March 13, 2024. Gail retired from Oxnard College in the late 90s as a librarian. The obituary below was recently received from Roma Metcalf, Gail’s daughter.

In Loving Memory of Gail Metcalf

January 7, 1936 – March 13, 2024

Gail Metcalf passed away peacefully at home in Camarillo, California, on March 13, 2024, at the age of 88. Born in Reno, Nevada, Gail devoted her life to books, education, and family. She worked as a librarian at Monte Vista Junior High, Santa Paula Library, and later Oxnard College Library until retiring in the late 1990s.Avid about folk dancing, history, and storytelling, Gail was a proud member of a local folk dance group and served as a docent at the Camarillo House. She loved spending summers at Lake George in Mammoth Lakes with her family and was rarely seen without a book in hand. Even in her later years, she continued writing her life stories through a weekly Ventura class called Preserving Your Past.

“Gail was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Roma Carmody; her sister, Nancy Linscott; and her granddaughter, Briana Linares. She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Walter Metcalf, who passed away six months later on September 29, 2024. She also leaves behind her children, Vicki Linares, Roma Metcalf, and Pat Metcalf; six grandchildren: Bruce, Patrick, Nick, Aretha, Matthew, Aimee; and eight great-grandchildren: Ethan, Lilly, Makayla, Leela, Nathanael, Amelia, Jonathan and Connor. Also, nephews, Kevin and Russell.

Gail’s love of learning, storytelling, and family will live on through the generations she inspired.”

Condolences may be emailed to Gail’s daughter, Roma, at amor4roma@yahoo.com.

Donald Bowen’s Passing

Don Bowen

It is with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of Don Bowen, founding faculty of Moorpark College on September 2, 2025. Don’s son, Michael Bowen, retired physics/mathematics professor from Ventura College, has provided the following thoughts on the passing of his father: “It is with great sadness that I report the death of my father, Donald C. Bowen, in the early evening of September 2, from complications of a stroke he suffered about two weeks ago. He passed in Vancouver, WA, at age 95, after spending his last few days in home hospice care. My sister Kimberly and I were able to visit him while he was still conscious enough to recognize us, but shortly thereafter he slipped into a coma from which he did not awaken. We are grateful to have had this opportunity to interact with him one last time, and we thank his wife Kyle for hosting us.

“My father was one of the founding faculty at Moorpark College, where he taught accounting. He was also chair of the business department for many of the 24 years of his teaching career. Before that, he worked in private industry as an auditor and computer operator. He retired in 1991, the same year that I began my own teaching career at Oxnard (and, later, Ventura) College.

“He had many interests outside of accounting. He loved history, literature, and flying private (small) aircraft. He earned numerous flying licenses and ratings, including instrument, commercial, aerobatic, and seaplane. He mostly flew out of Santa Paula and Santa Susana airports. My father was particularly adept at identifying military aircraft, and could tell you the engine model and displacement of most of the planes used in World War II, both Allied and enemy.

“He read over a thousand books after he retired, including scholarly collections such as Durant’s series “The History of Civilization.” He memorized and could quote numerous poems (everything from bawdy limericks to Ozymandias), and passages (some of them obscure) from Shakespeare. My father also asked me numerous questions about mathematics and physics, which interested him even though his understanding was limited. He knew so many factoids outside his field of study that a teaching colleague once called him a “compendium of trivia.”

“He had a sharp wit and a ready collection of bon mots. He was a great believer in the value of education, and provided the bulk of financial support for Kimberly and me to attend college (thank you, Dad!). He also donated to San Diego State University (his alma mater), UCLA (where he earned the first of his two MBAs), and the Moorpark College Foundation. I hope you will consider making a donation in his memory to one of these worthy organizations.

“Per his request, there will be no memorial service, and his Facebook accounts have been deactivated. I will miss his love, wit, and generosity.”
